Hola from Janet Perez Eckles…Igniting Your Passion to Overcome

Cameron Mills opened the door; the long-awaited delivery truck presented him with the box that contained the representation of success, the symbol of having reached the top.

The ring inside the box proved his champion status as a member of the basketball team that won the National Championship for the Kentucky Wild Cats.

He unwrapped the package and opened the box. But, when he put on the ring, no fireworks went off, no hallelujah choir resounded. The first thing he thought of was, “Is that all there is?” And then his next thought was “I have to go for another one.” That’s what success often brings—false rewards and unexpected disappointments. And sadly, the hunger for more still gnaws.

Is reaching the top bad? Not at all. As long as we know what the top may bring and what it will still lack.

God understands our human nature to want to succeed, to achieve and reach higher heights. He also knows how frail we can be during the journey, and in 2 Corinthians 4, God details four things to avoid:

  1. Feeling broken. We’re pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken.
  2. Tempted to quit. We are perplexed, but we don’t give up and quit.
  3. Feeling crushed. We are often troubled, but not crushed.
  4. Succumbing to despair. Sometimes we may be in doubt, but never in despair.

Cameron Mills learned that success isn’t always found in championships, but in being the champion for Christ. During the journey, with Christ as our coach, we aren’t crushed or broken. We never quit. And we’re never in despair. Rather, we’re in constant success, at the top of the situation, receiving the ring of pure, delicious contentment.

I had to have a session with God. And with no reservations, I opened my heart to Him. I confessed, I hungered to reach higher heights in my career, as a speaker, author, and Christian coach. But in the process, I had been crushed, tempted with doubt, and approaching despair. But now I know that with Jesus every moment brings new hope, every turn shows a promise, and every stage sings success.
