It was the strangest thing. My pillow was lumpy. What in the world? I thought as I reached inside the pillowcase and pulled out several of my favorite scarves one right after the other—my red, green, and lavender.

“Young lady,” I called out to my six-year-old granddaughter.

I lifted one in the air. “Did you do this?”

”Uh, uh…yes.”

I frowned. “Haven’t I told you that if you played with them, you must fold them and put them back where they belong?”

“Yes.”

“And haven’t I told you that we must have a place for everything and…”

She completed the sentence, “…everything in its place.”

“And haven’t I told you there are consequences for disobeying?”

But that disobedience lesson was for me, too. And dare I say, maybe for you too? You know, when painful setbacks, rejected contracts, empty calendars, or overwhelming marketing strategies darken our days, we often do the same. We stuff our hearts with fear, anxiety, discouragement and distress.

Courageous

But God who observes our heart that’s lumpy with things that don’t belong there, loves, gentle, yet firm: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.  Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

Father, how I needed that command to be courageous. To be strong because of your power that’s in me. To be confident because of your strong arms to hold me. I will put everything in its place—my disappointments in your healing power, my stress in your promise of peace, and my fear in your reassurance that you will be with me wherever I go. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

  • What is stuffed in your heart lately?
  • What needs to be released today?
  • What keeps you from being completely free?

For my gathering last Sunday afternoon, I prepared my favorite, delicious dessert. In a large, glass bowl, I layered pieces of yummy, sweet stuff.

In the midst of the ooh’s and aah’s after each bite, a guest who arrived a little late made her way to the counter where my beautiful display sat. But to my horror and her disappointment, the bowl was empty. Gulp.

“I hate making long-range plans,” I said to hubby at dinner the other night.

“You have to. If you don’t, you’ll flounder.”

Grrr. He’s right. But setting goals is way too tedious for me. I’d rather just do what comes up. You know, follow God’s lead for the moment. And contently, try to do my best each day.

“Oh, sweet friend,” I said in an email to my dearest friend from my college years, “I’ll be attending a fancy gala soon. And if you find any fancy gowns in your shopping ventures in my size, let me know. Little time for me to shop these days.”

As is her nature, she went to action. She researched and sent me links to dresses she chose according to my color and size. Then she wrote, “I found great bargains for gorgeous dresses. And I found other items that I’m sending too. I know they will look great on you. They’re all yours too. My gift to you.”

God smiled at me through my friend. Did you ever experience that? When you ask, God pours upon you more than expected in ways you never thought. God is that way. Like my friend, you ask for something that you need and He lavishes upon you.

There are three secrets to receive that immense love:

1. Keep friends close by, showing love and faithfulness to the relationship.

2. Make it a habit to be grateful for everything. Yes, everything.

3. Trust God will provide.

Can I share my heart with you? I’m immensely grateful for Jesus, the Friend who makes it possible to nurture friends on this earth. I make sure that even in my blindness, I see His hand at work upon my life.

And I trust, truly trust He will provide in the way He sees fit, in the precise moment He planned and in the fashion that will exceed my expectations.

I believe in God’s kind of love: “And to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure” (Ephesians 3:19).

How our days would shine if we thanked Him ahead of time for doors He will open in our ministry, praised Him even at times our writing is rejected, and waited with expectation at every turn.

“Nana,” my 4-year-old granddaughter ran to me. I got on one knee and spread my arms wide to catch her dainty body. I lift her up, hug her tight, twirl her around and we both squeal with joy. That’s our usual greeting.

But not today. She snuggled in her daddy’s arms. Her voice faint and her forehead burning. I placed her on my bed. Her body limp and her thin arms dropped to the side like a rag-doll.

I spread a wet washcloth across her forehead and whispered in her ear. “Nana is here, I’ll take care of you.” But in contrast, my heart desperately cried out. “Lord, heal my precious baby girl. Her fever has been going on too long! Heal her now, Lord!”
