During one of the first writer’s conferences I attended a decade or so ago, I met another writer. She was in the bathroom blowing her nose and sniffling. We chatted a bit and she related her devastation about the comments that had been scribbled throughout her manuscript.

A blend of pity and understanding entered my heart. That pity soon turned to empathy regarding the discouragement that sometimes results in tears.

The disappointment shows up without warning. It startles us when we think we’re following God’s call. When we’re working hard to complete an assignment. When we’re certain our writing is going to touch many with its message.

And suddenly, we see the reflection of the thief that steals our peace, robs our confidence and destroys our security.

This story told by an evangelist, illustrates this very attack. After I read it, it left me pondering. I hope it will you, too.

Some years ago my husband was traveling in Europe, and he would leave me alone with only my maid in a large house, far from neighbors. One night, after my habitual reading of the Bible and prayers, I went to bed. As soon as I entered our room, I saw, in the mirror, the reflection of a man hiding behind the wardrobe. I was terrified and thought of screaming for help, but I knew it would be useless. Determined to trust in God, I walked with trembling legs, with as brave a heart as possible, took my Bible that was on top of a small table and sat in the chair nearby. I started to read in a loud voice chapter 53 of Isaiah, and then knelt down and started to pray asking God for His protection against thieves and every kind of evil. Then I got up and sat in the chair again. I felt a hand touch my shoulder and a voice saying: “Don’t be afraid. You are safe. I came here to rob this house, but this chapter is the one my mother used to read to me, and your prayer reminded me of her prayers. I am going away now. You don’t need to be afraid of anything.

The battle is not between good and evil. Or with safety or danger. It’s not even a question of reaction or action. The battle is choosing to go with our emotions, or go with the ever-present power of God that abides in us.

So when life scribbles all kinds of adversity in our days, and the thief breaks in to steal our confidence, our soul declares: “The LORD watches over you-the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm-he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore,” (Psalm 121:5-8.).

With His protection from negative emotions, we write, we re-write and we submit once again. We do so because it’s God’s Word that defeats the negative emotions—sadness, discouragement and disappointment turning them to supernatural empowerment to persevere.
