Janet Perez Eckles, Igniting Your Passion to Overcome

Janet Perez Eckles

When I began this writing and speaking journey, my goals were lofty and my ambition, passionate. I could taste the success as thousands of readers would devour my insights.

I fell for the lie that says you have to do extraordinary things to be a true servant. And I believed that nothing less than selling tons of books or speaking to thousands would please God.

But rather than me focused so much on speaking, God’s wisdom speaks to me now. And recently, He did that very thing.

My friend and I were on the way home from dinner. I sat on the passenger’s seat beside her. We stopped at a red light and she quickly reached in her back seat. “There’s one,” she said as she rolled down her window. She quickly handed the homeless man a plastic bag filled with a can of Spam, a washcloth, a water bottle, potato chips, a napkin, protein bars and among other items, a track explaining God’s salvation.

I’m so impressed,” I said. “How long have you been doing this pretty cool thing?”

“For about ten years.”

Wow. My ordinary friend, with one bag at a time was doing something extraordinary for that person.

Bags of food kept “at the ready” in my friend’s car.

And if you’re thinking like I was, the answer is yes, we can be ordinary people and can do extraordinary things—not complicated, difficult or complex—simple but meaningful.

Here are six easy ways to be that ordinary writer and speaker doing extraordinary things:

  1. It’s not the pursuit of best-selling status that counts, but our passion with which we serve God.
  2. It doesn’t matter the style, but how steadily we press on.
  3. It’s not the numbers we reach, but how numerous our acts of daily kindness.
  4. How quickly we reach the top isn’t as important as how fast we take advantage of God-given daily opportunities.
  5. What we pen to publish isn’t as vital as what we write with our lives.
  6. Rather than get ready to follow our plans, we plan to follow what God has already prepared.

And when we do, God will reach for the bag of opportunities; the ones He planned specifically for you and me to do, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

Father, as I dash through my day with tasks on my to-do list, help me to slow down and pause to ponder and perform the works you assigned, you prepared and planned for me to do. In Jesus’ name I ask, amen.

  • Do you feel extraordinary these days?
  • What can take you out of the ordinary?
  • Will you act upon the fact that you can be one of those ordinary writers and speakers doing extraordinary things?
