“Over a hundred years? Who in the world wants to live that long!” my friend said as she read the story of the man who has been documented as living the longest in modern times—a Bolivian man, reported to be 123 years old.

His story perked my interest because this toothless man and I have two things in common: we’re both from Bolivia and we both eat Quinoa.

"06-20-14As you see his picture here (courtesy of http://www.arabnews.com) , what thoughts run through your mind? Mine was this: There were nearly 100 years of opportunity for someone to bring the truth about Jesus to him. Did someone do that? Maybe so. And right now he’s walking on streets of gold rather than on rocks and weeds. Then again, maybe not.

As I add almond milk, honey, and cinnamon to my bowl of Quinoa, my mind wonders. It doesn’t matter how long we live, but “how” we live.  Are our days secure in God’s promises? Are we relishing in the freedom He gives? Are our days overflowing with the confidence for tomorrow that only Jesus can bring?

Oh my. What if in our constant effort to move up to the next notch in our writing, in our speaking, eager to meet goals, reach higher heights and make things happen during this lifetime, we forget this raw truth: “Show me, O LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man’s life is but a breath” (Psalm 39:4-5).

Gulp. As a follow up to this jolting reminder of our days on earth, I invite you to listen to the melody of this promise:  “…God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have [Jesus] the Son of God does not have life” (1 John 5:11-12).

Father, in this fleeting breath that my life is, with you, my days can be rich with hope, vibrant with confidence, and alive with the glorious anticipation of eternity with you. In Jesus’s name, amen.

  • What rises to the top in your priority list?
  • What if today was your last day on earth? Where would you be for eternity?
  • How does Gods’ power in you change the perspective of this earthly life?

Cheering you on to experience life, harvest its lessons and share their outcome.
