I KarenHomefrontbook spent a lot of time this month with other writers as well as editors and retailers. I spoke at the International Christian Retail Show in early July and attended two conferences. The trade show continues to decrease in size but the energy and hope abounded. The publishing industry has done more to partner with author organizations.

With CAN we have partnered with the Munce Group and CBA (Christian Bookseller’s Association). Each one offers us opportunities to engage with retailers and work together to promote books and keep bookstores alive.

This Saturday a store in Scranton, PA will close while a store in York, SC has moved to a much larger location. It’s sad to see independent stores close and a joy to know some are thriving.

I have fond memories of taking my children to Christian bookstores and finding great treasures between colorful covers. Make an effort this week to visit a bookstore and make a purchase for yourself or a gift for the next special occasion.

What memories do you have of shopping at a Christian retail store?

Meanwhile, the synergy of getting together with writers invigorates me. I love listening to aspiring writers share their dreams and see the fruit of newly published authors. It’s good to spend time with writers since it can be a lonely profession. It’s a luxury for me to indulge in being on faculty for these conferences and get away from my desk for a few days. It’s been fun sharing ideas and encouraging aspiring writers. Alas, the internet has not been consistent so I will end here to be sure to post while I have service.

Blessings,
Karen
