In my career as a writer and speaker, there have been way too many “What was I thinking!” moments

Through the years, I’ve written about the pitfalls of looking into the past. I have realized the drawbacks of dwelling on yesterday’s mistakes, or last year’s failures.

These lessons have been well-learned. But on the other hand, there is value when we ponder on those moments that crossed our life, causing us to blush and cringe at the memories.

Have you had any? Let me share some:

  • Fifteen years ago, I wrote the masterpiece of the century—that’s what I thought my first book was. I sent it to another author as an attachment, hoping for an endorsement. Did I ask her permission? No. I assumed she would be delighted to receive a stellar work, for free no less. What was I thinking?
  • I received my first rejection from Chicken Soup and thought my story meant nothing. I ate discouragement at every meal for weeks. And my attitude reflected my gloom. What was I thinking?
  • When I spoke at my first large event, I completely missed one of the main points. I chastised myself mercilessly. What was I thinking?
  • When I would learn of a fellow writer/author attempting an avenue to reach higher levels, I dashed to mimic, copy or imitate her steps. What was I thinking?
  • When a literary agent from a reputable agency approached me and offered me a contract, I was too eager to have representation, I didn’t blink and signed on the dotted line. I hadn’t taken the time to pray, reflect or evaluate. What was I thinking?

And now I’m thinking that my mistakes and flawed approaches had tremendous value to make me the person God wanted me to be. The writer and speaker focused on Him, guided by His hand, and relishing in His Word. He gently turned my mistakes into mighty lessons.

So, have you had any “what was I thinking” moments?”
