Writer Friends

, by

Aloha from Karen Whiting, trasurer of CAN, I recently taught at a writer’s conference. I love the friendships I’ve developed over the years at conferences and other places. Other writers inspire me, understand the passion and lifestyle, and share similar goals. It’s important to develop friendships with other writers and industry professionals. I cherish a mug one writer friend gave me. It says, “Choose an Author as you would a friend” for I have many author friends.

Friend or Fan? (There Are No Foes Here)

Understanding the Difference Between a Facebook Profile and Page Hello from Cat Hoort. I was just visiting the Kregel Publications Facebook Page and found an interesting question from an author: I’m finally joining Facebook, but I need some advice. HOW should I be using Facebook? This is actually a very common question. I first congratulated the author on asking the right question. He didn’t ask SHOULD I be using Facebook? (he knew the answer to that was “yes”); instead he asked: HOW should I be using Facebook?

Pay It Forward

, by

Hi, all. Ava Pennington here again! Once upon a time I was the Vice President of Human Resources for an international insurance company. The corporate rat race consumed all my energies. Writing for publication was a vague dream that belonged to another life – a life far removed from my reality.

What are Influencers? by Jill Williamson

, by

An influencer is someone who dedicates themselves to helping spread the word about your book. You, or your publisher, compensate them by giving them a free copy of the novel. Influencers can have a wide variety of influence. Maybe they are a librarian. Or a pastor’s wife. Or a school teacher. Or someone with a popular blog. Maybe they are a book reviewer. Or maybe they aren’t any of those things but do a great job at spreading the word about books.

Roller Coaster Expectations

, by

Hi, Dan Walsh here, writing from Daytona Beach. As I look back on my “journey to publication” and the journey I’ve been on since, I’ve been reflecting lately on the topic of expectations. Specifically, their tendency to be out of sync with real life. It doesn’t just happen occasionally. I almost never get them right. And when life doesn’t line up, add up, or live up to my expectations, my heart falls into discouragement.

Real Courage

, by

Sherry Kyle here to encourage you from my laptop in Central California.  Here’s a quote we all can identify with as writers: "Real courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what."
-Harper Lee (To Kill A Mockingbird, 1960) If you’re anything like me, you feel this way daily. When I place my hands on the keyboard, I wonder if the words I’m going to write will be any good, if they’ll have meaning or if I’m wasting my time. That’s when courage comes into play. It takes…

Connecting at Conferences

, by

Aloha from Karen , treasurer of CAN, There’s synergy when people come together and connect, especially when they share ideas or brainstorm. CAN is all about sharing ideas and connecting authors to authors and readers. I love networking and making lots of connections as well as building on connections I’ve already made. For me, writing conferences are the perfect place for connecting with writers. And things happen at conferences–that’s where many of my books originated.
