How to Make New Year’s Resolutions

, by

“I hate making long-range plans,” I said to hubby at dinner the other night. “You have to. If you don’t, you’ll flounder.” Grrr. He’s right. But setting goals is way too tedious for me. I’d rather just do what comes up. You know, follow God’s lead for the moment. And contently, try to do my best each day.

"Brilliance in a bottle"

, by

Hello! And a very Merry Christmas to you! Maureen Pratt here for my monthly blog which, this year, just happens to fall a couple of days after one of my favorite holidays – you guessed it – Christmas! What I especially love about Christmas is that we get to bring out many of our dearly-held traditions. Whether it’s in baking, decorating, music, or Scripture study "what was old is new again" as we celebrate the Season. How does this relate to writing? Well, it reminds me that sometimes I miss "old" traditions of the authorial kind. Writing long-hand, for example,…

Go Back to Your Roots

, by

Hi, Dave Fessenden here, with something for you Christian writers out there to ponder. Have you ever thought about the roots of your writing? No, don’t go out in the back yard with a shovel (unless maybe you buried a manuscript out there!). I’m talking about the chronological roots of the material you write.

WRITERS WHO SPEAK – SPEAKER DO’S & DON’TS (Part 3)

, by

Golden Keyes Parsons here looking forward to celebrating the birth of our Savior in just a little more than a week. It is a festive season with a flurry of activities. Many of us have speaking engagements this time of year, and a luncheon, tea or banquet is usually the preferred event rather than a retreat. Although it is easier to come up with a one-session message, we only have one shot at them. What we have to say needs to be crisp and to the point. Let’s continue our discussion with some speaker DON’Ts this time…

Ways To Help Readers Connect

, by

Welcome to the Friday CAN post this December from Gail Gaymer Martin at www.gailgaymermartin.com. I always happy to share information for writers on techniques of writing, especially writing fiction. Readers are important so knowing how to help them connect to what you write is important. I hope this post will provide you with techniques and ideas that work. Readers love stories that mean something to them. They may never experience the same event or problem, but they’ve had similar experiences or fears that those things might happen to them. It’s through the emotion authors bring to the characters that makes…

Tips from the Pros: Janet Chester Bly

, by

Greetings from Sarah Sundin in California. Today I have the honor of interviewing Janet Chester Bly. She and her late husband, Stephen Bly, individually and as co-authors, have 120 published titles! I’m looking forward to hearing wisdom from a true veteran in the field of Christian writing. Janet, how did you get into writing? When my late husband, Stephen Bly, got God’s call into ministry, graduated from seminary, and began to pastor a church, I wanted to know His will for me too. That began a search of several years for my own spiritual gifts meant to benefit the church…

Keep Relationships First at Book Tables

, by

Aloha from Karen This fall I did several events where I had a booth or shared a booth. I didn’t try to simply hawk my books. I wanted to meet people and network so I focused on the people walking by. I greeted each one and made comments, such a s complimenting their clothing, and asked how they were doing. I tried to engage people in conversations.   I write to help meet needs of people and want to keep people first. It’s not about selling a book now, but developing relationships.

Overcoming Overwhelm

, by

Warm greetings to all of my fellow CANers! This is my first post, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to share my heart with you and, I trust, to bless you. Thank you for blessing me! Today, I’d like to talk about an issue I’ve struggled with and some solutions I’ve discovered. If you’re like me, you may have experienced the same struggle, especially at this time of year. The 21st century with all of its technological discoveries has engendered a new disorder called Overwhelm. Grammatically speaking, "overwhelm" is a verb, not a noun. But the case is…
