The Deepest Waters, by Dan Walsh

The Deepest Waters by Dan Walsh

This lovely novel is inspired by a true event, the sinking of the SS Central America off the North Carolina coast in 1857. The historical facts are heartbreaking, and author Dan Walsh doesn’t shy away from the sadness, hardship, and loss of life. But he also writes about the hope and miraculous rescues involved in such a way that the reader is captivated and emotionally invested in the story’s outcome. We experience the parallel journeys of John and Laura Foster, the newlyweds who are separated when the women and children are the only ones rescued before the ship sinks. We watch the best and worst in people emerge when valor is tested. And we experience what can only be the loving hand of God in bringing about circumstances that are all the more fascinating for having actually happened in real life. Recommended.

Writing for an Audience of One

Dan - Revell's pic for 2010, smaller Hi, Dan Walsh here in Daytona Beach with, hopefully, some fresh encouragement for Christian writers.

I’d like to offer a reminder that there is One who sees all we do and all that we write, and this One has a different way of measuring its value. I remember a worship song a few years back titled, “Audience of One.” I loved it immediately because it reminded me of what Jesus said was the first and greatest commandment.

Roller Coaster Expectations

Dan - Revell's pic for 2010, smaller Hi, Dan Walsh here, writing from Daytona Beach.

As I look back on my “journey to publication” and the journey I’ve been on since, I’ve been reflecting lately on the topic of expectations. Specifically, their tendency to be out of sync with real life. It doesn’t just happen occasionally. I almost never get them right. And when life doesn’t line up, add up, or live up to my expectations, my heart falls into discouragement.

What Matters Most

Dan Walsh - Headshot - small

I know some of you were able to attend ACFW’s annual conference a few weeks ago in Indianapolis. Many who could not, have probably read some of the great articles written about the wonderful time we had (just remembered that old postcard line: “Good time was had by all”).
