Where Does Stability Reside?

, by

In Discovering Joy in Philippians: A Creative Bible Study Experience, we look at verses that show the path to true joy. Having a stable life with a sure foundation does make life more joyful. Let’s take a quick glance at Psalms 15 to see the stepping stones to stability (note the bold faced italicized words): Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent?     Who may live on your holy mountain?  2 The one whose walk is blameless,     who does what is righteous,     who speaks the truth from their heart; 3 whose tongue utters no slander,     who does no wrong to a neighbor,     and casts…

When Your Pity Party Gets Shut Down

, by

This Christmas season, my wife and I went to the beach, a post-Christmas, Merry-Christmas-to-us present. We arrived on Friday afternoon and talked about what we could do and where we could go for our fortieth anniversary in 2021. We continued the discussion the next morning until we received a series of text messages. They came from our middle daughter, whose family was staying with us. A tree had fallen and wiped out our power line. Pictures depicted how the line had bent the mast pole, yanked the lines out of the meter box, and fried the inside to the…

Walk With Me

And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me (Luke 9:23) Some might not connect this verse with joy, but it is actually the path to true joy.  In Discovering Joy in Philippians: A Creative Bible Study Experience, we look at a key verse that connects denying our selves, picking up the cross and joy. If you look at some of the key words in Greek, you gain the HOW of walking toward Jess and toward joy. Deny means to say “No” or…

Double Jeopardy – Why This Story Will Change You as a Reader

, by

By Donna Schlachter When I think about books from my childhood, I recall books like Black Beauty and Call of the Wild. What really sticks with me is both told stories of heartbreak and joy, of separation and reunion, or defeat and victory. Throughout these two books in particular, bad things happened for no good reason. People got sick. Died. Animals were mistreated. Lives were shattered. But then. . . In the end, all was set right with their world. When I sit down to write a book, I ask myself, “How bad can things get?” And then I put…
