Hola from Janet Perez Eckles…Igniting Your Passion to Overcome
“Unfortunately, we cannot offer you a contract at this time.” Gulp. How do we face this bad news? How to handle this reply from publishers has been a quest for me for years till I heard this story.
My friend’s son had placed a beautiful bird feeder outside his window, hoping to enjoy the birds visiting from time to time. But rather than visit, they formed their nest inside it. And then began a very odd routine—they woke up with loud singing at 3:30 in the morning. Tired of being awakened at such hour, my friend’s son pulled out a whip which he kept from his days as an actor. And with one fast swish, he struck the whip on the concrete. The loud noise, resembling a gunshot sent the birds flying, never to come back again.
When bad news invades our day, some do the same as those birds—take off flying in emotional hysteria. Others, like me, are frozen, numb to the news. But whatever groups we fall into, here are three things God instructs us to do to maintain our peace and conquer the fear that bad news brings:
- When Christ lives in us we possess the righteousness that shields us from any bad news: “A righteous man will be remembered forever. He will have no fear of bad news…” (Psalm 112:6b-7) Without fear, we can focus on the next step, we can draw courage from God’s Word, and we refuel our passion to keep trying.
- Rather than allow rejections from publishers, the tacit reminder that our speaking calendar is sort of empty or cancellation of events, our hearts are still at peace because we trust in God’s promises. “His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.” (Psalm 112:7b) When we truly trust God will provide what we need, when we need it and how much we need, invites joy back into our days.
- The enemies of worry, uncertainty, pain, or heartache lose their power because “His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes.” (Psalm 112:8 ) Counting in God’s triumph, His everlasting love to know where we need to be, and the power of His grace is sufficient to take us to the finish line.
I’m staying nestled in the home of confidence God prepared for me. No bad news, disappointments or rejections shall send me flying into hysteria. How about you?
