HELLO from Kathy Collard Miller in the sunny California desert near Palm Springs.
My 50th book, Never Ever Be the Same: A New You Starts Today (Leafwood) will be released tomorrow, January 13th. I never could have seen that coming so many years ago when I started writing.
Even as a child I’d always wanted to be a writer and so when the Lord put it on my heart to write an article about how He had delivered me from being a child abuser, it felt perfect.
I sold that first article to Moody Monthly in 1978 and then decided to attend a writers conference at Forest Home in Southern California in 1980. That began the love affair with that strange new world of writing.
I came home from there with the idea to write a book about my experience but year after year, I returned to that writers conference and no one was interested in such a book. I can still remember delaying going to a meal at the 1983 writers conference and walked the grounds crying and seeking God, “Did you tell me to write this book or not? Nothing’s happening!”
But then God opened the door. That first book, Out Of Control, was published by Word in 1984 and God kept creating open doors. Book after book, then Bible studies, then commentaries for the non-theology people. Amazing! And my speaking increased until I was speaking 50 times a year. Amazing!
Then six years ago God called Larry and I to a sabbatical from ministry (we both were speaking and writing by then). Our britches had grown too big. We thought we had pure motives for ministry but through intensive counseling we learned we weren’t quite as purely motivated as we thought. That sabbatical continued in several different ways for five-six years.
Then we felt God opened the door for full ministry again. But the writing world had passed us by. Technology, contacts, everything seemed to have changed. No open doors. Opened doors closed shut. Again and again. I had 49 published books and it didn’t seem to make any difference. Was it time to quit?
Then another open door that didn’t shut in our faces. Leafwood Publishers wanted the book! My 50th book baby would be born. Never Ever Be the Same is co-written with my husband, Larry, and it helps Christians make lasting godly changes. It offers biblical inspiration, practical instruction and many personal stories of the work God did in our lives. And what we believe God can empower Christians for overcoming their tenacious ungodly patterns.
Maybe you’re stuck in some way in your ministry. I don’t know what God’s plan is for you but I do know He’ll be faithful to fulfill His sovereign will for you! Trust Him.
