Cheri Cowell

Greetings from Mount Dora, Florida, where we’ve had lots of rain every day this week. And we’re not complaining, since drought conditions have led to increased fire danger. The subject of today’s interview, Cheri Cowell, has also had extra rain in her area. Since she’s one of my fellow Orlando-area CAN authors, when my home has rain, hers usually does, too!

Welcome, Cheri! I’m so glad to share this time together. My first question is one every author loves: Would you please tell us about your latest book, One Story, One Mission, One God?

This workbook-style Bible study is an overview of the whole Bible in two six-week studies. The Old Testament and the New Testament studies help readers see how the Bible is one story about the same God with a single mission from the beginning to the end.

I love that! So what inspired you to write this book?

I’ve heard people say they’ve gotten bits and pieces of the Bible but have a difficult time pulling it all together. I’ve also heard some say there appears to be an angry God in the Old Testament and a grace-filled God in the New. I wanted to help people see how all those stories come together to tell a story about God’s mission of grace, from the opening scenes in Genesis to the closing one predicted in Revelation.

That’s fabulous. And what was your greatest challenge in writing this book?

I think most people struggle with God’s instructions in the Old Testament to destroy whole groups of people. I discovered an answer to why that’s in there that stays true to the Scriptures and true to who we know God to be.

And to find out, we’ll have to dig into your book, won’t we? Cheri, how has being a writer impacted your relationship with Christ?

I love sharing what I’ve learned as I have sought answers and struggled with difficult Scriptures. I think a lot of people think those of us with seminary degrees have all of the answers, but we don’t. We struggle just like they do, and some of us are privileged to write about it.

Exactly. So what’s one thing about writing that you wish non-writers knew?

It’s a discipline. When some people hear I work from home, they think that means I am always available, but my husband says I work harder than most people he knows.

I know that’s true! Do you have an unfulfilled dream?

My husband and were born and raised in Florida, and it has always been our dream to move to the mountains of Tennessee. Well, that dream just came true, and so we will be snowbirds, living winters in our Florida home and summers in the Smoky Mountains.

I’m so happy for you. Congratulations! Cheri, what ministries are you involved in, and why?

I operate a publishing company that helps others get the words God has given to them out into the world. The profits from EABooks Publishing go to fund microloans through my 501c2, Living Parables, for start-up funding of Christian nonprofits. Our goal is to expand our reach by helping others succeed.

That’s amazing. Can you share with us your hobbies, activities, or passions outside of writing?

I don’t have much spare time, but I love nature, so we hike and travel to national parks. I also do scrapbooking to preserve those family memories.

You’re such a well-rounded person, Cheri. I know that’s part of what makes you such a wonderful author and friend. Can you tell us about your next book?

On my blog, I’m giving a sneak peek of my new Bible study: Wow! Women of the Word.

The title alone sounds intriguing, Cheri. Thanks so much taking time to share with our readers. Blessings!

Marti Pieper_HeadshotSpringtime greetings from Florida. I just returned from teaching at the Colorado Christian Writers Conference, and one of the first people I saw back home in Florida was my good friend, Cheri Cowell. Cheri is a prolific writer and speaker and also happens to be one of the first authors from whom I learned marketing tips. I'm delighted to share an updated interview with her today!

Cheri, how many books do you have published? 4 What are a few of your latest titles?

Living the Story: Reaching Outside the Church Walls, and Parables and Word Pictures of the New Testament in the Following God Bible study series from AMG.

You were last featured on the CAN blog in 2009. What are the chief lessons Cheri Cowell_Headshotyou’ve learned about the writing life since then?

We need to have a long-term view of things. A longer view helps me not get so stressed about the little things and allows me to enjoy the fruits of my labor along the way.

That's great advice not just for marketing, but for life in general. What are the chief lessons you’ve learned about promotion since your last CAN interview?

We can't be experts on everything. Find what you are good at and what you enjoy and do those things well. That implies we've tried everything, so we do need to know about everything, just maybe not as an expert.

Cheri’s Speaking Topics:

As an author, speaker, and sidewalk theologian, Cheri Cowell brings wit, wisdom, and sound biblical teaching to the sidewalk issues of life. From a refreshing vulnerability about her own struggles with the deep questions of faith, and based solidly in her degree from Asbury Theological Seminary, Cheri brings light and understanding to those issues often avoided as “too difficult.” Questions such as:

Why does a loving God allow bad things?
Is there a way to share the Gospel without sounding preachy?
How can I know it is God’s voice and not another voice leading me astray?
Can the Bible really be trusted since it was written so long ago? Aren’t there too many contradictions?
If you are looking for a speaker for your next event that will inspire and offer sound biblical teaching, Cheri is your choice.

Living Parables

The Parables come to life through this multi-media drama presentation inspiring audiences to live parable-shaped lives as did Jesus, the Ultimate Living Parable. This is Cheri’s keynote presentation created from the research she did for her new Bible study, Parables and Word Pictures from the New Testament.

Ponderables and Parables

This application-oriented workshop gives you the tools for adopting parable-shaped lives that can transform a church, a community, and a nation. Added to the above presentation, this workshop adds the how-to to the inspiration.

StoryCraft: Reaching Outside the Church Walls

The new art of evangelism is story-sharing. In this workshop, learn to share your story as part of God’s story and become a living parable in your community and to your family. Again, this workshop can be added to the Keynote presentation for a “here’s how” to the inspiration.

Hello God, Is This Really You?

Hearing from God in a noisy world. This is based upon Cheri’s book, Direction: Discernment for the Decisions of Your Life, and includes her powerful testimony.

Diamonds in the Dust

Healing our brokenness and learning to SHINE again. This presentation is perfect for senior’s groups with its positive message and uplifting stories.

CHRIST is the Heart of Christmas

Filled with one touching story after another, this presentation will invite your women to make Christ the heart of Christmas and every day of the year. It ends with the dramatic recitation of the poem Twas the Night Before Jesus Came.

ParablesParables and Word Pictures from the New Testament: Following God series by Cheri Cowell

Publisher: AMG Publishers
ISBN: 0899573495

Parables and Word Pictures from the New Testament is a 13-week workbook-style study of 118 parables from Jesus, Paul, and the apostles. This comprehensive look at the New Testament parables will help readers develop an ear for the message they convey—that the Kingdom of God is both here and near. Through the study readers will be challenged to live faithful and holy “Kingdom lives” in a broken and unholy world. Of the thirteen weeks, the first nine explore the parables of Jesus in the four gospels; the next three look at the parables in Acts and those from Paul and the apostles. The study culminates in a look at what the author calls living parables, with Jesus as the Parable of all parables. Through Him we come to know God the Father, and through Jesus we come to live as living parables in a world begging to “see God.” Living story-shaped lives allows others to see God in us—this is Kingdom living.

Author, speaker, and sidewalk theologian, Cheri Cowell is passionate about discipleship and challenging the body of Christ to holiness of heart and life. As the author of Direction: Discernment for the Decisions of Your Life (Beacon Hill, 2007) and over 300 articles, Cheri’s love of story and the Holy Word shines through in her writing and teaching. In 2009 she was one of six journalists chosen for a tour of the Holy Land by the Israeli Ministry of Tourism, a blessing that only deepened he love of the parables Jesus told. Cheri is a graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary where she learned the Inductive Bible study method used in this study to encourage, challenge, and equip the body of Christ to live Story-shaped lives. Cheri and her husband, Randy, call Orlando, FL home.
