Hola from Janet Perez Eckles…Igniting Your Passion to Overcome
Like most of you, I ponder, reflect, evaluate and pray and pray some more before heading to any writer’s conference or event. I did the same before this past AWSA and ICRS events in Orlando.
This year the decision was easier. I figured that since they were being held in my hometown, hotel expenses would be eliminated. And I could even host some dear friends in our home.
Then came the hard part—what to wear, what to wear. I thought I’d be a tad bold and chose sort of a daring attire.
I decided to put on an attitude to observe, learn, and understand. I slipped on the shoes that would allow me to walk in the path God would pave. And I chose a large purse that would carry my own desires, own whims, judgments, and insecurities. I jammed them all at the very bottom so there they would stay.
I left at home any specific agendas to meet editors, make a plan with my agent, to land a connection leading to a book contract. All those expectations that sometimes would cause wrinkles to my peace were left at home. They remained secure in my closet stored for another occasion.
Dressed appropriately, I relished in golden moments, hugging old friends, meeting new ones. I found it a thrill to chat about our journeys, sharing our difficulties, chatting about our dreams. The time was lovely and I felt so secure in the attire I wore.
Imagine my surprise, no, change that, my delight when I was awarded the “Beyond Me” award at the Golden Scroll Banquet presented by AWSA. As I said before, it was a fitting award as it’s beyond me how I deserved such an honor.
Great things continued. I met the loveliest lady, her tender, genuine demeanor made my heart smile. And to my utter delight, she happens to be the acquisitions editor for a large publishing house.
As we spoke, she indicated she wants to see my writing. She would refer me to the publisher’s radio show for an interview. And she informed me she would contact my agent.
After all ended, I went to bed wearing the gown of gratitude, profound appreciation for God’s plans that prevail when we’re dressed in the correct attire.
How about you? Do you struggle when deciding what to wear when about to attend conferences or events?
