Welcome from Davalynn Spencer to today’s interview with author Ginny Dent Brant as she visits about her featured book, Unleash Our God-Given Healing: Eight Steps to Prevent and Survive Cancer.
Ginny, please give us a brief overview of your book.
My book pulls back the curtain on cancer in a way rarely seen and answers the question “What can I do to help my doctor beat this disease?” I challenge you to change what your doctor has no control over—your lifestyle and health habits. These changes can be powerful.
What inspired you to write this intriguing title?
My cancer diagnosis sent me on a quest to discover what caused a health nut like me to contract an aggressive breast cancer. When the chaplain at my cancer hospital suggested that I use my cancer journey as a gift to help others, my response was “No way, I don’t want this gift.” It was hard for me to say the word cancer, much less write a book or speak about it publically. After three years of research, I felt compelled to write this book to prevent others from this nightmare. I realized many people are unknowingly doing the same things that I did that made us all at risk for cancer.
This sounds like a book for any- and everyone. Does it have a particular focus with which you worked?
I connect the dots between nutrition, lifestyle, integrative and conventional medicine, and biblical wisdom to reveal how your body was created with self-healing mechanisms that work optimally when we do our part. I address eight lifestyle changes which all build our immune system while lowering our toxic load. Cancer and disease prevention has everything to do with keeping our immune system strong and working as God intended.
What surprised you the most during your research and writing?
I was amazed to see how much lifestyle changes can affect our health.
This almost sounds like a “no-brainer,” but I suspect many people overlook this important key. What do you hope readers will take away from this book?
This book was written for those who want to prevent cancer, those who must get through the journey and treatments successfully, and for those who want to prevent recurrence. Eight research-backed steps are given. At the end of each of the eight sections, a summarized list is given for those who are on a budget and desire to prevent cancer, those in the journey, and those who are high risk.
Such specific directives sound as if you have dealt with these issues in your own life.
Six weeks after I completed my year of chemotherapy, my red and white blood cells and platelets were all back within normal ranges. My doctors called me their “rock star” cancer patient because this usually takes two to five years. By continuing to follow the eight steps, instead of having a compromised immune system, my immune system is thriving. I’ve lessened my susceptibility to colds, flus and viruses—yes, even COVID-19!
Wow – that’s quite an accomplishment!
In your overall writing, is there a theme to which you return again and again?
God created our bodies with an innate ability to heal and regenerate, but we must do the right things to not suppress the miraculous immune system God has given to us.
Such an application suggests a life lived in concentration on Him. When did you first recognize God’s call to write?
After so many wonderful overseas mission trips, my local Baptist newspaper asked me write down my experiences. After seeing how my writings influenced others, I realized I could impact the world through my words. After my father died in 2007, my heart was filled with both sorrow and gratitude to God for what He did in my father’s life. It was then that I knew God was leading me to write my first book, “Finding True Freedom: From the White House to the World.” It journeys our father-daughter relationship from the Watergate Trials to the mission field of Romania. It shows how God miraculously worked in the life of my father in an answer to my simple prayer of salvation for my dad. God went far beyond my prayers as He took my father into full time ministry.
What an amazing story, Ginny. Are there particular ministries in which you are involved today?
I am a speaker and singer who communicates my faith through church events and women’s conferences. I’m an author who also writes devotionals, magazine interviews, and inspirational articles. And I teach the Bible to women’s groups. Since my cancer journey, I now mentor cancer patients through the journey.
With so many levels of involvement, did you have a “day job” or previous career that influenced what or how you write?
I have many experiences from my 32-year career as a teacher, counselor, and adjunct professor in education. My husband and I have also participated in mission work in Romania, The Czech Republic, Russia, China, Yemen, and Gaza. I have many rich experiences from my career and mission work that end up in one of my articles, devotionals, or books.
With such experiences, surely you have another project pending. What can you tell us about it?
I plan to write a smaller book which will focus on how to get through the cancer journey. I’ve also contemplated writing a book about how our culture is impacting children and what we can do to make a difference.
I’m intrigued already. Thank you, Ginny, for sharing with us today.
