Authors in Action!

This week our CAN authors are sharing heart warming stories of fulfilling the Great Commission and speaking around the country on matters close to their heart!

Grace Fox just completed an 11-day trip through Nepal. This was a pilgrimage of sorts for her and her eldest daughter who was born with hydrocephalus in Nepal 33 years ago. Her daughter’s lifelong dream has been to visit her birthplace, and this trip fulfilled that dream. Read the beginning of this story—how Grace’s husband returned to North America with their three-day old daughter while Grace was left behind in Kathmandu not knowing whether or not she would see her baby alive again. https://www.christianity.com/11622440/

Also on this trip Grace and her husband, Gene, visited the village where they lived for two years in the 80s. Gene was a civil engineer then, and he helped build a hydro project that brought electricity to this region. They discovered that these Hindu friends now watch TV programs that present the Gospel. Without electricity, this wouldn’t be possible. Another highlight was distributing Nepalese Bibles to the villagers. God is on the move.

Returning to My First Love

I’ll never forget the day I was cleaning my top dresser drawer and found a treasure.

I read through the stack of aged, yellowed papers and instantly realized why I’d kept them. On them were written words of endearment—nearly 30 years ago—from my husband. They contained irresistible phrases like, “You complete me like no other” and “I love you desperately.”

As I read through them, my eyes teared. And then my heart dropped. Why doesn’t he write these words to me anymore?

It would have been easy to believe he was the one who had become distant, more critical, and less interested in me through the years. It was a little tougher, though, to ask if I were the one who let resentments build or baggage get in the way.

That night, I lay awake next to my husband and wondered how to turn back the clock. How could I make him see me the way he once did—as the captivating woman he fell in love with? Then I realized there was only one way to recapture his heart: be the woman I was and do the things I did when he first fell in love with me.

In Revelation 2:4-5 Christ told a first-century church, “You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen. Repent and do the things you did at first.”

While that verse can apply to complacency in our relationship with Christ, it can also apply to marriage. God is not the only One who recognizes when our enthusiasm for Him has waned. Husbands recognize when our enthusiasm for them has waned, too.

That night I asked God to help me look to Him as my first love and then begin responding to my husband the way I did when we first married.

“Author Susan G Mathis did a wonderful job with this dual timeline novel, The Fabric of Hope: An Irish Family Legacy. Beginning in 1851 Ireland, you could “see” what was happening. The family forced to make a difficult decision. You could “feel” the ship creaking and swaying on the sea. The fear and the hope were evident. Then in the modern day, you sensed Maggie’s desperation and witnessed her spiritual growth.

I thoroughly enjoyed the historical information that was woven throughout this book. Maybe because I have Irish ancestry it meant more, but it was all so well written that you were there. Despair turns to triumph as both women learn to trust and lean on God. If you enjoy historical fiction, or stories with Irish legacy, I highly recommend this book!” —V.B. Sluiter
