Greetings from Sarah Sundin! Today I have the joy of interviewing Lane Jordan, author of both fiction and nonfiction books. Today she’s sharing about her novel Evangeline, which won the 2022 AWSA Golden Scroll Award!
Congratulations, Lane, and welcome! Please tell us about Evangeline.
Take the beautiful, biblical story of Esther, change the lead character’s race from Jewish to biracial, place the location in New York City during the 1960s era of turmoil at the time of the civil rights movement, and you have a modern-day parallel to the story of Esther. King and Evie, the main characters, beautifully portray this timeless tale of romance and righteousness in action.
What inspired you to write this book?
I was having my quiet time one morning and at that time I was reading through the Bible. I was in the book of Esther when a thought came right to me, “This would be a great story about civil rights!” I started taking notes from the book of Esther and then started researching the period I wanted to use. I know the idea came from God!
Great twist on a favorite Bible story! What surprised you the most during the research or writing of your book?
I didn’t realize how hard it would be to keep the dates and real events lined up correctly. I hate to read a book where you know the timeline is wrong! One good thing is I remember the 1960s and so the events in the book happened i.e., the blackout in New York City.
All of us historical novelists can relate to this! So, what do you hope readers will take away from this book?
Always, as with all my books, I pray the readers will see that God is in control and He is in our lives for our good! I want the reader to fall in love with God and walk with Him daily.
Wonderful! What’s your favorite scene in this book?
My favorite scene in Evangeline is where her uncle tells her that she is in this place for a reason. “Who knows whether you have been brought to this place for such a time as this?”
Such an important theme. What other themes do you return to again and again in your writing?
My first 6 books are based on helping women become more organized but with a different twist! That we can only do this through the strength of the Lord.
Speaking of organization, tell us about your ideal writing place.
My ideal writing place is my office! It’s a very cheerful room with huge windows overlooking the backyard and has my collection of antique wicker furniture: a sofa, 2 chairs, a chaise lounge, and a soft rug on hardwood. This is also where I have my quiet time each morning. All my books, Bibles, paper, and pen are here.
Sounds both organized and serene! When did you first recognize God’s call to write for Him?
I first recognized God’s call to write when I was a little girl and just knew I wanted to write a book someday. God led me to major in Journalism/Broadcasting at Georgia State University. I ended up working for Dr. Charles Stanley in his In Touch television ministry and as editor of the paper.
What ministries are you involved in, and why?
I am involved as a Life Coach to women, a weekly Bible teacher in my home, volunteer in my church, as well as with my community (as our local food help) and in my neighborhood as a village rep. I do these because I believe God wants us out in the world as a light to show others the way.
You’re a very busy woman! Do you have time and talents for other activities?
I have always loved art and did embroidery for years. Fifteen years ago, I started oil painting and it’s my passion! I sell my paintings and take commissions. My web site is www.ArtByLane.com. I also am in two book clubs because I love to read! And I love sports, walking, hiking, tennis, and pickleball.
With all those activities and ministries, how do you stay disciplined and meet your deadlines?
I’m very, very disciplined which I think I got from my childhood! There were 7 children, and my mom was excellent at organizing everything. However, the older I get, the easier it is to procrastinate!
Tell us about your favorite library memory.
My favorite library memory is my mom taking me to the library and story time. One time, they wanted to take a picture of the group and I was so little they had to put me on a box! I love books so much and I love doing all I can to help women in their lives.
With that great love for books and writing, I’m sure you’re not done! Please tell us about your next project.
My next book will be another nonfiction The Disciplines of a Beautiful Woman. I will be following my other book, 12 Steps to Becoming a More Organized Woman, which was a bestseller.
Sounds intriguing! Thanks for sharing with us, Lane!
